Transfer Switch Installations

Cox Electric regularly installs transfer switches for generators. Since the big electricity outage in Central Texas in 2021, people realize the importance of having a home generator.

Generators need a transfer switch or interlock and outlet to connect them to your homes electrical panels. A transfer switch directs power between your utility provider, your generator, and your electrical panels to ensure the safe operation of your generator standby system. Without a transfer switch in line with your generator you could damage your expensive generator equipment, your power panels, and be injured while connecting your system to your home. Additionally, with the introduction of solar systems on many homes today it is important to have your generator properly installed to prevent damage to your solar panel systems.

There are both automatic and manual transfer switches. Many large permanent generators have an automatic transfer switch while most small portable generators are connected using a manual transfer switch or interlock device. With an automatic transfer switch your generator automatically switches to generator power when needed and then back to your utility company when the power becomes available. These automatic features enable a smooth transition between power sources as needed without the hassle of going out in a storm to try and connect your standby power. It is also a great option for those who travel or are frequently away from their residence. Manual transfer switches, just like the name implies, require you to turn them on when needed. Manual transfer switches are more suited to those using portable generators as they are already having to wheel their generator out and plug it in to connect it to there system and activating a manual switch to connect it to their system is just another small step in the process.
